The season pulls back the curtain twenty-seven years, to a much younger, far more vulnerable Kyoko living at the White Center shelter after her father's death and her mother's abandonment. There, her closest bond is with an older girl who looks after her like a big sister — one of the residents eventually rounded up and trucked out to the toxic meteorite debris site under the guise of 'cleanup work.' Desperate to hear how her friend's day went, young Kyoko sneaks into the returning truck that night — and instead finds it packed with the bodies of everyone who was sent out, her friend among them, before the corpses are quietly hauled off to be disposed of without a trace. Shattered and terrified of being next, Kyoko flees the shelter under cover of darkness, stows away on transport heading into the city, and washes up alone and starving in Tokyo. It's there, at a modest little ramen shop, that a kind young man named Ren finds her, feeds her, and — learning she has absolutely nowhere else to go — takes her in without hesitation, offering to be the family she no longer has. The episode is a devastating, tender flashback that finally explains why Kyoko is so personally consumed by this case, and it plants the seed of the bond between her and Ren that the season's darkest twists will later hinge on.
